Fourteen-year-old Lily Melissa Owens is the main character and protagonist of the novel The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd. She lives in Sylvan, South Carolina on a peach farm. Lily Owens has without a doubt, gone through serious trauma in a short amount of time. To give a general idea, she accidentally killed her mother and has an abusive father, who goes by T. Ray, who brutally mistreats her. When Lily was only four-years-old, she unexpectedly killed her mother after witnessing a fight between her parents. Soon after, she decided to leave her home with her caretaker Rosaleen. Lily has been worn out from her fathers inhumane actions yet she realized the amount of injustice her nanny Rosaleen gets, encouraging her to become stronger mentally. Rosaleen has taught Lily to become more independent and helped her majorly to get out of the hole she dug from all the cruel punishments given by her father. This leads to Lilys coming of age experience. Coming of age is all about self-discovery and overcoming obstacles in your youth years. Throughout the whole novel, Lily has many experiences leading to her coming of age experience as a whole. She has gone through most things many of her age have never experienced. Lily has felt an abundance of guilt and even confusion from her accident in the past. Lily has done some things without her father knowing to avoid any more abuse. Because of this, she knew she had to leave before he found out and gave her any more pain. I believe this was one of the main paths of her coming of age as she made her own decision to leave T. Ray, leading her to become an independent young woman. Lily has matured a lot since finding out the truth about her mother. She thought her mother Deborah left her when she was young but the truth was soon revealed when Lily asked her father after being asked to come back if she really killed her mother on accident and he said yes. This caused her to finally learn about forgiveness now having no secrets about her past. Lily really learned that being able to understand her past and learn about forgiveness truly led her to maturity in her life. I do believe that these learnings of universal value to the readers who read this book. As a young teen myself, I can say that I had my coming of age experience and hadnt experienced it to the fullest yet. Moving to a different country almost three years ago has changed my life in many ways. My family and I came across many obstacles in our lives but we managed to fight against it. Although I feel that there is more coming towards me and I think my only goal at the end is to fully understand myself while maturing. Most readers of this novel The Secret Life of Bees are younger teens just like me who have and will go through more obstacles in life, coming of age. This novel allowed me to relate in a sense with Lily Owens and understand the experiences that she went through that I have never experienced before. The Secret Life of Bees really encouraged my brain to think deeper about the story and this really changed my outlook on our society. We all evolved and I think the act of forgiveness is something we can all learn. This is one of those stories that makes you feel all kinds of emotions and I tried to put myself in her shoes just to try and feel how she wouldve felt but never necessarily going through what she has gone through made it quite difficult. I have gotten a deeper understanding of what actually coming of age experiences can be.

Authority figures have great impact on the common people, for if they act in dishonest or fraudulent manners, the society considers it acceptable to do the same. Such reflections between authority figures and society are seen throughout Gabriel Marquez’s Chronicle of a Death Foretold and Albert Camus’s The Stranger. With societies constantly looking to authority figures for guidance, Marquez and Camus satirically depict folly in†¦show more content†¦Thus, the community does not prepare to show the bishop their support for the Church, but instead in hopes that the gifts would bring individual benefits. Through Marquez’s narration, a reader realizes the facade that the society creates. By immediately establishing the religious commun ity as a self-seeking body, Marquez paves the way for a parallelism between the authority figures and society. The religious authority figures referred to within Marquez’s novel, specifically the bishop, prove their hypocrisy according to the morals of Christianity/Catholicism. Commonly accepted, Christianity teaches a person the qualities of forgiveness, acceptance, and love. Thus, a strong religious leader teaches his people this behavior andguides the community to live by such ideals. Ironically, the bishop in Chronicle of A Death Foretold exhibits great apathy toward his people. For some reason that remains unmentioned throughout the novel, the bishop has an aversion to the Caribbean island. In fact, he only blesses the town due to mere obligation. The blessing shows little devotion, for the bishop simply makes â€Å"the sign of the cross in the air opposite the crowd on the pier,† a blessing â€Å"without malice or inspiration†(Marquez 19). This scientific breakthrough led to the progress of biotechnology or genetic engineering, as we know it today. It is very clear that the use of biotechnology in agriculture will have great implications for agriculture, the environment, and the economy around the world. It is already making an impact on the worlds food supply. Some of the first genetically improved products has included major food crops, such as soybeans and corn, as well as cotton. These genetic changes help plants protect themselves against insects or make them tolerant to herbicides that is used to control weeds. The economic benefits for farmers have been seen, and data is proving that genetically improved crops make the environment better by reducing the use of insecticides and herbicides. Scientists are working on more products that will include direct consumer benefits, such as increased levels of vitamins in fruits and vegetables, improved amino acid or fatty acid, or improved texture and taste. The first genetically improved crop was a tomato, approved for commercial sale in the United States in 1994. Roman rites and observances took two main forms. One was the domestic reverence of the spirit or genius of the family. The other was the public attitude to the gods and goddesses by whom the destiny and welfare of the Roman people as a whole were supposed to be guided and controlled. During the Classical period, religious observance accompanied all important private and public events and transactions and, no successful outcome went without a vow of thanks or public dedication. Temples, priests and sacred rites were provided by the State. Nothing in the nature of religious services as we know them, in which the body of worshipers as a whole were able to participate, seems to have been celebrated in the temples. Any set forms of prayers, hymns or chants were performed solely by the official priest s whose secrets they remained. The ordinary Roman man or woman had little personal part to play in such rites (Handbook To Life In Ancient Greece). While they were being undertaken and fulfilled it was the duty of the ordinary citizen not to interfere or make any disturbance and to refrain from any business affairs.
